77-Yr.-Old Ontario Resident Becomes Oldest Woman To Ever Conquer Mt. Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is a legendary peak and has filled climbers with awe, wonder and exhaustion almost since the beginning of the time. But it’s nothing compared to the legend of 77-year-old Ann Windh. She became the oldest woman in the world to ever climb the monstrous mountain when she completed the feat in October.

It’s a far cry from her home in Bronte, Ontario, but the retired - though hardly retiring - woman insists that’s exactly the point. It’s that rarified atmosphere that keeps her coming back for another peak at Mother Nature. “What an awesome feeling to sit on top of the mountain, right on top of the world,” she agrees. “You can see the glacier and the sad feeling knowing that in a few years it won’t be there any more.” Continue Reading…

‘Save the snow’ Kilimanjaro initiative by Philips employees

Right now, 45 Philips employees, their families and friends, are attempting to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro (5895m), the highest mountain in Africa, which is on the border between Kenya and Tanzania. They are doing this to promote energy efficient lighting as a part solution to the huge and growing problem of climate change. They also aim to raise money for an Oxfam Novib project in Tanzania:

Although it was spoken of in the second century, Mount Kilimanjaro was only ‘discovered’ by the western world in 1848, when the German missionary Johannes Rebmann came within sight of the mountain, explored the area and traversed the lower slopes. He submitted his findings to the Royal Geographical Society, but his description of a snowcapped mountain in eastern equatorial Africa was doubted by these ‘experts’.
